The statue ensured that John T. Wilson would not be forgotten. In Tranquility Cemetery, Wilson’s tombstone, once marked by an obelisk, has been updated. Now, a large rectangle of granite bears his name, as well as his wife’s and son’s. At the base of the monument is a Grand Army of the Republic star. As I walked around the cemetery, I saw the names of men who Wilson recruited to serve with him in the war. Among them was former postmaster John A. McCreight, who died September 12, 1904. (So many McCreights lie in the cemetery that they have their own section.)

As I stood before Wilson’s marker again and considered his courage, I thought, Here lies a real American hero, unsung.
